Grammar Sheet

How Russian numbers work, one small rule at a time. Tap any Russian word to hear it.

1

How numbers are built

You only need about 30 words. Pick a group to see its pattern.

2

One and two change with gender

1 has three forms (один, одна, одно) and 2 has two (два, две). They match the gender of the thing you count. No other number does this.

3

Counting things: the 1 / 2-4 / 5+ rule

The word after a number changes its ending. Only the last digits of the number matter. Change the number and the thing to see the rule work.

Ends in 1 (but not 11)
Ends in 2, 3 or 4 (but not 12, 13, 14)
Everything else: 0, 5 to 20, 25 to 30...
4

Thousands and millions

тысяча (thousand) is itself a feminine word, so it follows rule 3 and takes одна / две. миллион is masculine, so it takes один / два.

5

First, second, third...

Ordinal numbers behave like adjectives: the ending matches the gender of the noun. In a longer number only the last word changes: двадцать первый (21st).

Spelling and sound tips

Small things that trip up most learners. Tap the underlined words to hear them.

  • Soft sign at the end for 5 to 20 and 30: , , , .
  • Soft sign in the middle for 50 to 80 and 500 to 900: , , . A number never has both.
  • No "and" between the parts: 105 is , never "сто и пять".
  • Unstressed "о" sounds like "a": is said "adín" and is "adínnatsat'".
  • Zero has two words: is the everyday one and appears in some set phrases.
